Recently I was asked, ” Is possible to freeze to death in your sleep?” This is a question that has plagued the minds of many adventurers. You definitely would not want to fall asleep on a col night with the looming risk of not waking up from cold!
Here is the good news. Freezing to Death while you sleep is actually an old wive’s tale. It is highly unlikely that you that you can freeze to death in your sleep – unless you are on heavy tranquilizers. Truth be told, your body will actually wake itself if it gets to cold. Typically rolling over or changing position a few time will generate enough heat to raise your body temperature to a safe level.
So the next time you are out in cold weather, don’t shy away from sleep. As a matter of fact, it is a great way to conserve your energy in survival scenarios – just make sure you have the necessities taken care of before you nod off! For instance, make sure you have some water, fire and shelter. The shelter and fire will help your body conserve energy and heat while you rest. The water is just a very important need that your body needs.
