Not everyone will experience being hungry, lost and without food. Those are feelings that instantly strike fear in most everyone’s heart. Even though we may never have to face that fear, it is still very smart to be prepared for it. For that reason we are starting a couple of ‘Surviving the Wilds’ series to educate and inform. Just as G.I Joe taught us, knowing is half the battle. Before we venture too specific, it always good to set some basic tenants that can always be beneficial.
- Don’t starve. There is always food present – no matter the season. Always try to keep a positive attitude and be aware and open to what is around you.
- Start with a little. When you are trying a wild plant always try a small amount first to see what effects it has on you. If there is no effect then you can slowly add and check on side effects with each addition.
- Variety is the spice of life. Don’t stick with just one animal or plant as fuel for your body. The body requires many different nutrients and forms of fuel; carbs, fat and protein are all necessary.
- Don’t panic. If you keep these rules, go in with knowledge of the wilds, and keep your wits about you, then you have nothing to worry about. The keys are confidence, awareness, and creativity.
Now on to the fun stuff, learning more about the plants, methods, and skills that will help you survive the wilds.
